SAN MARCOS, Texas – A 22-4 run during the second half was not enough as the Texas State men's basketball team dropped its fifth straight, 72-63 to Louisiana Lafayette, Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum.Â
Texas State was down 44-28 with 18 minutes to go in the second half, when it began its 22-4 run. During the stretch, Kavin Tilbury and Ethan Montalvo combined for four three-pointers. The spurt spanned just six minutes capped by a highlight reel play, with Montalvo driving to the lane and under handing a pass out to the top of the key, which Tilbury knocked down from beyond the arc.
Emani Gant stretched the Bobcat lead to 60-56 with 5:44 to go as he finished a 2-on-1 fast break attempt with a dunk. Gant had gotten the defensive rebound and started to lead the break before he found D.J. Brown in the left corner, beginning a give-and-go ending in the two-handed slam.
Tilbury finished the game with a career-high 20 points and had five rebounds and four assists. His one block on the night led to the defensive rebound Gant had to start his fast break. Gant ended the game with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Louisiana Lafayette went on a 14-1 run in the last five minutes of the game, after trailing 62-58. Kasey Shepherd hit a three-pointer from the left wing with 1:39 to go, capping a 10-0 run at the time, giving the Rajun Cajuns a 68-62 lead.
