MOBILE, Ala. – A dominant first half led to the Texas State men's basketball team sweeping the regular season series from South Alabama 63-43, Wednesday. With the win, the Bobcats are now 11-10 overall and own the tiebreaker over the Jaguars.Â
Texas State exploded out to a 16-4 lead through the first nine minutes of play. The Bobcat defense spurred the team's strong start, forcing the Jaguars to begin 0-of-8 from the field and not allowing a point until the 13:46 mark in the first half.Â
After the Jaguars traded baskets for much of the next 10 minutes, Ethan Montalvo capped a strong first half performance by hitting a straightaway three-pointer and was fouled on the play, allowing him to hit the free throw to make it a four-point play. Montalvo finished the first half with 12 points on 3-of-7 from three-point range and 4-of-9 overall. For the game he was 5-of-11 from the field and 4-of-8 from three-point range.Â
Wes Davis, who saw his first action in five games, showed he was good to go by draining a left corner three with just a few seconds before halftime and Texas State took a 36-18 lead into the break.Â
Texas State was up 48-31 when its reserves took over. First Ojai Black drove baseline and did a nice left handed layup. JaMarcus Weatherspoon followed it up by hitting a left wing three-pointer, the first of his career, and an acrobatic layup to give the Bobcats a 55-31 lead.Â
Weatherspoon joined Montalvo as the only Bobcats in double figures scoring, finishing with 12 points. Backup center Kendell Ramlal scored a career-high six points and added a block. For the game, the Bobcats' bench had 22 points.Â
The Bobcats will complete their two-game road trip on Saturday at 5:00 p.m., at UALR. Saturday's game is available on radio on 89.9 FM KTSW and online at www.txstatebocats.com/radio.
