Bobcats Looking for 2-0 Start in Sun Belt

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Texas State men's basketball team looks to start the Sun Belt season 2-0, when it faces Georgia Southern for the first time in 40 years on Saturday. The last time the two teams met was in 1965, a meeting won by the Eagles.

On Tuesday night, Texas State won its Sun Belt opener 57-46 over Troy. Ethan Montalvo had a breakout game, scoring a career-high 20 points on 6-of-9 from the three-point line. Montalvo is eighth in the league in three-point field goal percentage at .385 (15-of-39).

Defensively Texas State moved up to 11th in the country defensively after holding Troy to just 47 points. The Bobcats did not allow a point for the final 11:35 of the first half against the Trojans. Overall, the team is averaging just 55.0 points per game allowed.

Scouting Georgia Southern

Georgia Southern also comes into Saturday's game with a record of 7-3 overall. The Eagles dropped their Sun Belt opener on Tuesday to UT Arlington, 62-61.

Individually, senior Jelani Hewitt, who is averaging 21.3 points per game, the most in the Sun Belt, and good for seventh in the country, leads the team. He relies on the three-point shot, averaging 3.3 made three-pointers per game, most in the Sun Belt and 16th in the country.

Hewitt has also put up impressive numbers defensively, averaging 3.2 steals per game, most in the conference and second most in the country.
