Tulsa, Okla. Â– What will undoubtedly go down as one of the most memorable games in Texas State history, the Bobcats won their first overtime game as an FBS member, beating Tulsa on the road 37-34 in three overtimes at H.A. Chapman Stadium, in Tulsa, Okla.
Bradley Miller who was the top target most of the night for Texas State, came up huge again in the third overtime. On a 3rd-and-11 from the Tulsa 26 yard line when he caught a pass along the left sideline down to the Golden Hurricane 2-yard line. That set up Terrence Franks who scored his second touchdown of the night to give the Bobcats the winning score 37-34.
Texas State got on the board midway through the second quarter, thanks to the running ability of Tyler Jones. First he scrambled out and found Brice Gunter on a 29-yard pass down to the Tulsa nine-yard line. Jones followed it up by keeping the ball on a read option on third down from the 3-yard line and scoring his team leading third touchdown of the season to put Texas State up 7-0.
Jones then showed off his arm to begin the third quarter. He had a number of critical third down conversions, including a 23-yard pass to Bradley Miller down to the Tulsa 27. After the Bobcats were aided by a defensive holding penalty, Terrence Franks ran it in from eight yards out to give Texas State a 14-0 lead.
Miller continued to pace the offense, en route to his career-day finishing with 112 yards. His most impressive catch of the day came in the third quarter when he leaped over a Tulsa defender to pull in a 19-yard pass along the right sideline. His catch would lead to a 49-yard field goal by Will Johnson, on his first attempt of the season.
The deciding moment of regulation came with 10 seconds to go as Tulsa scored on a quarterback sneak to tie the game at 17-17.
Tulsa scored on its first possession of OT, a 10-yard catch and run from Dane Evans to Keevan Lucas to go up 24-17. The Bobcats then responded on 4th-and-goal on their possession with a five-yard touchdown pass to Jafus Gaines, to tie it up at 24-24.
On the Bobcats' first play of the second overtime, Jones hit Ijah down the left sidelines for a 35-yard TD, giving Texas State a 31-24 lead. Tulsa would respond with a four-yard run to go into a third overtime.
Tyler Jones finished the day with 228 yards through the air and 51 more running. Terrence Franks, who started in place of Robert Lowe led the team in rushing with 71 yards. Defensively, Mayo had a team-high 20 tackles.
The Bobcats will be back in action to start Sun Belt Conference play against Idaho next Saturday at 6 p.m., from Bobcat Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPN 3.Â
