Soccer Dominates Panthers 2-0

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas State soccer team had a dominating performance over Prairie View A&M, winning 2-0, Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. The Bobcats had a school record 36 shots offensively, including 18 on goal. With the win the Bobcats are now 5-2-1 on the season.

The Bobcats' second unit made an impact on the game in the first half, accounting for 10 of the team's first 18 shots. Clarissa Leon was especially effective, coming up with six shots, a team-high in the first half. She finished the game with nine, tying for the team high with Lynsey Curry.

The star of the first 45 minutes was freshman Rachel Grout who accounted for both goals. Both came off crosses from the right side. The first was just outside the 18-yard box from Brenna Smith. The second came from Leon who brought the defense out before finding Grout sprinting towards the goal. The two shots were part of an 18-1 advantage for the Bobcats in the first half.

The second half saw more domination from the Bobcats who put on another 18 shots to finish with 36 for the game, passing the previous school record of 34. Curry gave herself multiple looks at the goal but had two of them bounce off the post for would-be goals. Midfielder Brenna Smith also put in a number of great leading passes to forwards for breakaways, but none were able to convert in the second half as the score stayed at 2-0.

Defensively, the Bobcats limited the Panthers to just six shots on the night including two on goal. Caitlynn Rinehart got the win, moving to 5-2-1 on the season. Freshman Maddi Nordstrom saw the first action of her collegiate career, coming in with just over eight minutes to go to help preserve the team's fifth shutout of the year.

The Bobcats will be back in action on Sunday night at 7 p.m., when they take on the University of Texas in their final non-conference regular game of the season. The game will be at the Bobcat Soccer Complex and admission is free.
