San Marcos, Texas – On a night when Texas State retired Jeff Foster's jersey, Xavian Rimmer's three-pointer with 10 seconds left lifted Louisiana-Lafayette to a 67-66 victory over Texas State on Saturday night.
Phil Hawkins gave Texas State its biggest lead at 60-48 with 6:43 left. But threes by Rimmer and Hayward Register started Louisiana on a 14-4 run that left the Rajun' Cajuns down just 64-62 with 1:35 left. Wes Davis stripped a Ragin Cajun and went down and scored for Texas State before Louisiana's Shawn Long responded with 29 seconds left.
The Bobcats turned the ball over with 19 seconds left, looking to break full court pressure setting up Rimmer's game-winner. Texas State tried to go end-to-end following the three but Joel Wright lost it off his foot, allowing the Ragin Cajuns to come away with a win. Wright finished the game as the team's leading scorer with 17 points.
Kavin Gilder-Tilbury had the highlight dunk of the night for the Bobcats, using a backdoor cut to throw a huge dunk down and extend Texas State's led to 58-46 at the time.
Davis played stellar defense on highly touted player Elfird Payton the majority of the night. Davis limited Payton to just 3-of-11 from the field and 10 points in total. Davis contributed on the offensive end as well, finishing with 14 points.
At halftime, Texas State retired the jersey of Jeff Foster, who played for the Bobcats from 1995-99 before going on to a 13-year NBA career with the Indiana Pacers. Foster was a member of Texas State's 1997 NCAA Tournament team, just the second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. Video tributes from former Texas State and Indiana Pacer dignitaries aired throughout the game.
