Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Defense Not Enough in Loss to No. 8 Texas

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team played stingy defense but could never quite get its offense in gear, as it fell to No. 8 Texas 59-27, Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.

"Our game plan was not to let them score a lot of points," head coach Danny Kaspar said. "Our game plan was certainly to score more than 27 points. I have no explanation except some of our guys may have been intimidated by the height [of Texas] they saw. Rick's [Barnes] team does a good job. I thought we played pretty good defense in the first half, we just couldn't score. 59 points given up to Texas in their own gym is certainly not something to sneer at. I think if Isaiah [Taylor] is ok and he can go, I think Texas has a chance to do very well this year. I see them as an Elite Eight team."

The Bobcats forced 19 turnovers by the Longhorns, compared to just eight for Texas State. Unfortunately, Texas State was unable to convert those opportunities into points, scoring just 11 points off UT turnovers.

Texas State was cold from the field for most of the night, shooting 11-of-51, 21.6 percent. Kavin Gilder-Tilbury, finished with six points, making both of Texas State's three-pointers. He also had the team lead in steals with three, marking the third straight game he has had three or more steals.

The Bobcats will next play against Danny Kaspar's old team, Stephen F. Austin, on Wednesday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m., in Nacogdoches, Texas. It will be the first time Kaspar has returned to SFA to coach against the Lumberjacks since leaving two years ago. Wednesday's game will be broadcast on 89.9 FM KTSW and www.txstatebobcats.com/radio.
