SAN MARCOS, Texas Â– UL-Lafayette demonstrated why it was chosen as the unanimous Sun Belt Preseason favorite, Tuesday night as it defeated Texas State 34-10 at Bobcat Stadium.
UL-Lafayette scored on the second play from scrimmage, a 62-yard pass from Preseason Player of the Year Terrence Broadway to Elijah McGuire for the 7-0 lead. Broadway and McGuire led the Cajun effort on the night finishing with 338 total yards (225 passing, 113 rushing) and 149 total yards (64 rushing and 85 receiving) respectively.
For Texas State, Michael Odiari and Dallas McClarty gave the team life in the second quarter, recording sacks on back-to-back drives. Odiari's sack backed the Cajuns up to their own two-yardline. The ensuing punt for UL-Lafayette went out of bounds at its own 26-yard line setting the Bobcats up with great field position.
Bradley Miller had the highlight of the night offensively, catching an 18-yard pass to set up 1st-and-goal. Texas State got its first points of the night with that drive, cutting the lead to 7-3, but that is as close as it would get.
Texas State scored its only touchdown of the game with a minute to go in the fourth quarter. Tyler Jones hit Brice Gunter down the right sideline for his first career touchdown.
The Bobcats will now have 11 days off before returning to action on Oct. 25, at UL-Monroe. Kickoff time from Monroe, La., is set for 6:00 p.m. and it will be televised on ESPN 3.
