Bobcats Sweep Arkansas in Final Tournament Match

TULSA, Okla. – Texas State swept Arkansas (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) Saturday to improve to 9-4 on the season after falling to Golden Hurricane Classic host Tulsa, 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17) earlier in the day.
 
For the entire day, Amari Deardorff and Alexandra Simms led the Bobcats on offense. Against Arkansas, Deardorff paced Texas State with 14 kills and a .393 hitting percentage to help her to an All-Tournament selection while Simms tallied 12 kills. Caylin Mahoney gave out 31 assists with nine digs and four block assists while Ashlee Hilbun patrolled the net for seven block assists in the match.
 
Against Arkansas, Texas State came out strong in the first set. The Bobcats built leads of 12-6 and 15-8 in the set as Hilbun led the team to a 25-21 win. She tallied four kills on a .429 percentage in the opening frame.
 
Simms led Texas State in the second set with three kills as the Bobcats put down nine kills to win the set, 25-18. Arkansas led both teams in blocks through two sets, 12-10, but Texas State's blocks always seemed to come at the biggest moments for momentum. Thanks to five blocks and 14 digs in the set, Texas State only allowed a -.184 hitting percentage for the Razorbacks. For the match, Arkansas only hit .010.
 
With Arkansas leading 7-2 early in the second frame, Texas State grabbed the momentum to go on an 11-1 run for a 13-8 lead. The Bobcats put another run together to close out the set strong. Only ahead by one, 18-17, Texas State went on a 7-1 run to claim a 2-0 lead in the match.
 
In the third and final set of the match, Arkansas kept coming back to tie it, but the Bobcats would not be denied. Deardorff hit the two final kills for Texas State down the stretch, including the winning point for the Bobcats.
 
The day started with a set that came down to the end. Neither team hit well in the opening frame, but Deardorff and Hilbun both put down three kills to pace the Bobcats while Erica Bohannon led Tulsa with four on a .364 hitting percentage.
 
While hitting wasn't working too well for Texas State, they brought the blocks, putting down five in the first set to just two for Tulsa.
 
Texas State came back to win the second set, 25-21 behind the work of Simms and Deardorff. Simms put down eight kills in the second frame while Deardorff added six. The back row gave Mahoney plenty of good passes to set up the hitters as she gave out 16 assists in the set. The Bobcats followed a .094 hitting percentage in the first set with an outstanding .452 in the second.
 
The third set started off close with seven ties in the early going until it was tied, 8-8. Tulsa went on a 5-0 run for a 13-8 lead and eventually built the lead to 20-11. Texas State came back to pull within four, 23-19, but couldn't overcome the spread. Simms had six kills in the set while Deardorff added four.
 
Unfortunately, the fourth set looked much like the third as Tulsa took it, 25-17. Simms finished the first match leading all players in kills with 17. Deardorff tallied 16 with Hilbun pitching in 13 kills on a .600 hitting percentage. Deardorff finished at .343. Meanwhile, Mahoney gave out 43 assists for 10.8 assists per set while also notching 12 digs and four kills. Sierra Smith led the team with 16 digs while Ali Hubicsak pitched in 12. Simms added 8.
 
The Bobcats were much more effective on the block than Tulsa, notching 10 for the match. Molly Ahrens led the charge with one solo block and five assists while Shelby Vas Matt and Deardorff were each in on four apiece.
 
The Bobcats return to San Marcos to host Texas Tech at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday before heading to San Antonio for this season's first installment of the I-35 Rivalry against UTSA at 6 p.m. Friday.
