Men’s Basketball Routs Seattle U 68-56 to Advance to WAC Tournament Quarterfinals

Las Vegas, Nevada – Seventh-seeded Texas State earned its first WAC Tournament victory tonight as it routed 10th-seeded Seattle U 68-56 in the first round. The Bobcats shot 50 percent from the floor at the Orleans Arena to advance to the quarterfinals.

Joel Wright was solid for Texas State, as he notched his 10th 20-point scoring game. Wright registered 26 points, while adding nine rebounds and four steals. Senior Matt Staff tallied 13 points and two blocked shots to help lift the Bobcats to the win. Texas State shot 84.6 percent from the charity stripe.

Texas State (11-21) started the game on an 8-0 run, highlighted with dunks by Wright and Reid Koenen. The Bobcats led by as many as 12 points in the first half, and shot 50 percent from the floor. Wright paced the group with 16 points and a 6-of-6 performance from the charity stripe.

Seattle U started the second half on an 8-0 run of its own, capped by a Chad Rasmussen bucket with 16:14 to go in the second to give the game its first tie. Texas State then went on an 11-3 run over the course of four minutes to take a 47-39 edge over the Redhawks.

The Redhawks were able to trim the Bobcats' lead to three points with 7:56 left to play, but that is the closest Seattle U would get. Texas State found its offensive rhythm and sank 10 out of 12 free throws in the final two minutes and 19 seconds to grab the 12-point win.

Deshaun Sunderhaus led Seattle U (8-22) with 15 points. Prince Obasi had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Chad Rasmussen chipped in 11 points. The Redhawks shot 33.9 percent from the floor and 81.3 percent from the free throw line.

Texas State will continue play in the WAC Tournament on Thursday, March 14 when it will face No. 2 seed Denver in the quarterfinals. Tip-off versus the Pioneers is slated for 4:30 p.m. CT.
