Arlington, Texas – Texas State recorded a season-low 12 made field goals tonight, as it fell to UT Arlington, 75-50, tonight at the College Park Center. The Bobcats also recorded a season-high 23 turnovers in its largest loss of the season.
Reid Koenen and Corey Stern led the Bobcats' offense tonight. Koenen recorded 12 points, while Stern chipped in eight. Texas State shot 22.6 percent from the floor and 64.7 from the charity stripe.
Texas State trailed by five points at the half, but UT Arlington came out of the locker room strong. The Mavericks went on a 14-5 run to start the second half which led to a 45-31 lead for the home team.
The Bobcats continued to struggle from the floor in the second. Matt Staff made a pair of buckets in the first-three minutes of the half, but Texas State did not make another field goal until 6:54 to go in the game thanks to a layup by Vonn Jones.
Texas State tried to cut into UT Arlington's lead, but tonight its shots just weren't falling. The Bobcats weren't able to make shots, but they connected on 22-of-34 free throws in the game. UT Arlington never trailed in the game, and led by as many as 28 points late in the second.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half. The Bobcats finished 9-for-29 from the floor, while the Mavericks were 11-for-34. Texas State went on a 9-2 run to end the first half, but UT Arlington was able to take a 31-26 lead into the locker room.
Kevin Butler led UT Arlington's offense. Butler registered 21 points, while Karol Gruszecki added 13 points. UT Arlington shot 39 percent from the floor in the game, and 76.9 percent from the free throw line.
Texas State will head to Ruston, La. next to face Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip-off versus the league-leading Bulldogs is slated for 7 p.m.
