San Marcos, Texas – Texas State had a strong first half, but things turned south in the second period as the Bobcats fell 85-53 to Texas, Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin.
Texas State used hot early three-point shooting to go on a 12-2 run and take the early lead of the game at 12-10. Wes Davis first hit a left corner three in transition before Joel Wright hit a three of his own on the break. Kavin Gilder-Tilbury capped streak with a left wing three as three of the team's first four made field goals were from three.
Wright kept the Bobcats locked in the defensive battle for the majority of the first half. He came from behind to strip a Longhorn and then went coast-to-coast for the dunk, tying the game at 20-20. Texas then went on a run at the end of the first half to take a 33-22 lead into halftime.
The second half was all Longhorns, as they used their athleticism to outscore the Bobcats 52-31 after halftime. 6-9 285 pound center Cam Ridley had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Texas.
For the Bobcats, Wright led the team with 19 points and 13 rebounds. It was his second double-double of the season. His 13 rebounds tied a career-high.
The Bobcats will next head to Pac 12 school Utah, on Thursday, Dec. 19 to take on the Utes. Tip time is set for 8:00 p.m., central time. The game will be aired on the Pac 12 Network and on the radio at KTSW 89.9 FM and www.txstatebobcats.com.
