2013 Hall Of Honor Class Announced

San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State "T" Association recently announced its 2013 distinguished Athletic Alumni Hall of Honor Class as voted on annually by the "T" Association Board of Directors. Induction into the Hall of Honor is the highest athletic honor given to Texas State athletic alumni. Texas State is excited to announce this year's class that includes volleyball standout Kay Kinsala Pogue and football stars Rey Farias, Lee Lundin, and Rex Turner.

The 2013 Induction Ceremony takes place on Friday, November 22, in the Sac N Pac Room at Bobcat Stadium. Each recipient will also be recognized during halftime of the November 23 Bobcat football game versus Western Kentucky. Texas State University Athletics would like to congratulate the following 2013 Hall of Honor inductees:

Kay Kinsala Pogue
Kay Kinsala Pogue was a four-year letter winner for the Texas State volleyball team from 1973-1977, and a member of the university track team from 1973-74. A pioneer of women's athletics at Texas State, in 1977, she was the very first recipient of the Jean Smith Outstanding Female Athlete Award. This award is given annually to the top female athlete at Texas State. In 1984, Pogue was one of the first original 18 women inducted into the formerly all-male "T" Association.

Pogue was an outside hitter for the Bobcats throughout her four-year career, and stepped in as a setter her senior year. For her accomplishments on the court, Pogue was named team captain in her sophomore season, and co-captain of the team during her junior and senior seasons. In 1977, she was named the team's Most Valuable Player. As a member of the track and field team, Pogue competed in the discus and shot put.

While attending Texas State, Pogue was a member of several different groups and organizations. She was a member of Who's who in American Colleges and Universities, and the Honor Academic Fraternities of Sigma Delta Pi (Spanish), and Delta Psi Kappa (Physical Education). Pogue also made the Dean's list three out of her four years at the University. In 1977, Kay graduated with honors while receiving a bachelor's degree in physical education. She later went on to earn her master's, in health and physical education from Lamar University.

After graduation, Pogue became a teacher at Hays High School and was awarded teacher of the year for the 1978-1979 school year. In 1980, she was an assistant coach on the Class 2A State Basketball runner-up team and coached the 2A State Track Mile Relay finalist team. In late 1980, Pogue accepted a position as an assistant men's and women's volleyball coach at Lamar while she worked on her master's degree. In the summer of 1981, Pogue continued to play and coach volleyball, including a stint as an assistant coach/player for the USA Christian Volleyball team during trips to Brazil and Argentina. From 1982-1984, she served as an assistant volleyball coach at Texas State. Pogue was also assistant coach at Texas State and Lamar while they competed in the United States Volleyball Association in the off-seasons.

Pogue spent a total of over 26 years as an educator, including positions with Hays, Alice and Alpine Independent School Districts. During her teaching career she served in numerous roles including physical education and Spanish teacher, tennis coach, volleyball coach, track coach and basketball coach. Pogue retired from the Alpine Independent School District in 2007 after 15 years of service.

Today, Kay lives with her husband, Jimmie, in Alpine, Texas. They have one child, Aliston, who also graduated from Texas State with a degree in finance. Kay continues to support the Bobcats by donating to the Texas State volleyball program, and has participated in "T" Association events for several years.

Rey Farias
Rey Farias was a four-year letter winner for the Bobcat Football team from 1961-1965. A standout out running back for the Bobcats, Farias was among the Lone Star Conference leaders in scoring and rushing throughout his four-year career.

A three-year starter, Farias, played defense for the Bobcats while starting as a cornerback beginning in his sophomore season. That year he was the team's second leading scorer and led the team in receiving yards as a running back while helping the Bobcats finish 8-2. During his junior year, the 1963 team went undefeated, while winning a Lone Star Conference Championship and earning a No. 1 national ranking in NAIA. Farias, also known for his receiving ability, hooked up with quarterback Dee White that season for an 80 yard completion out of the backfield. At the time that was the longest pass completion in Bobcat History. Farias was rewarded for his outstanding play; earning All-American Honorable Mention accolades his senior year. During his senior season, Farias was a Pre-Season Little All-American candidate. Before a season ending injury, he led the conference in both scoring and rushing, and finished the season leading the team in total rushing yards and rushing yards per game. That team also finished the season with an impressive 8-2 record.

After graduating with a bachelor of science in education, Farias went on to play professional football for the San Antonio Toros for three seasons. He was later inducted into the National Hispanic Hall of Fame in San Antonio in 2007 and the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of Fame in 2010.

After his professional football career ended, Farias earned a master's degree in education from Our Lady of the Lake University and began an extensive career as an educator. He began his career in education at South San Antonio ISD, where he was a football coach and math teacher for 10 years. He later transferred to Los Fresnos CISD, where he was a football coach, athletic director, math teacher, assistant principal, high school principal, and director of maintenance over the course of 27 years. Rey completed his teaching career at Brownsville ISD where he taught Special Education until his retirement in 2009.

Farias has served on the Los Fresnos School District board since 2004, serving as President in 2010, when the board was selected as the Region 1 Board of the Year and Outstanding School Board of Texas.

Rey currently resides in Los Fresnos with his wife, Darlene. They have three children, Kim, Kristie and Vikki who all also attended Texas State. Ray is currently a member of the St. Cecilla Catholic Church, a member of the Quarterback Club in Los Fresnos, and is active in the Texas State Alumni Association. He enjoys attending Texas State football games and class reunions.
Lee Lundin
Lee Lundin
Lee Lundin was a four-year letter winner for the Bobcats football team from 1983-1986. A defensive specialist, Lundin played several positions for the Bobcats including strong safety, cornerback and nickel back. He also excelled for the Bobcats as special teams player.

Lundin started his career at Texas State as a two-sport athlete, as he played both baseball and was a redshirt on the football team. During his second year as a collegiate athlete, he decided to concentrate solely on football and made an immediate impact on special teams during his first season on the team.

As a sophomore, Lundin had his first start as a cornerback during the Bobcats' game against Wichita State and was named Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Central Florida. During his junior year, he continued his role as a defensive back and special teams player, and was named Special Teams Player of the Week during the Bobcats' game against Nicholls State.

During his final year at Texas State, Lundin moved from cornerback to free safety and had his finest year as a Bobcat football player. In a brilliant game against North Texas, he recorded 11 tackles. Against Rice University, he picked off three interceptions to help seal a 31-6 victory, and tied the Bobcat football record for most interceptions in one game. He also broke the school record for most interceptions in a single season with nine total pickoffs. He was named Gulf Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance against Rice, and earned Gulf Star Conference Athlete of the Week for his accomplishments against Stephen F. Austin. Lundin was chosen to the Gulf Star All-Conference Team and was also named team captain. He ended his career as a Bobcat by being named 'Mr. Bobcat' at the year-end football banquet. Today, Lundin continues to share the record for most interceptions in a game and continues to hold the record for the most interceptions in a season.

In addition to his athletic pursuits, Lundin was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Order and was a "Pi Guy" to the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. Lundin earned a bachelor's degree in business administration in 1987. After graduation, Lundin started AJL Advertising Specialties, Inc. in 1989 where he continues to be the owner and president.

Lundin has been active in Texas State Athletics and the "T" Association along with being a member of the Bobcat Club since the early 1990's. He served on the Bobcat Club Board of Directors from 1995-2005 and on the Executive Board of Directors from 1998-2004. He was an original member of the Touchdown Team and is a proud supporter of all Texas State Athletics.

Lee and his wife, Jessica, live in Austin. Jessica is also a former Texas State graduate and was a member of the Strutters. They have two beautiful children, Alexandra (18) and Dane (14). Lee's nephew, Lee C. Lundin, also played football for the Bobcats.

Rex Turner
Rex Turner was three-year letter winner for the Bobcat Football team from 1961-1963, and led the team in scoring during three consecutive seasons as both a standout running back and kicker.

Co-captain in 1963, Turner led his team to an undefeated season and a Lone Star Conference championship. During his senior season, he set the record for most points scored in a single season with 78 points including eight touchdowns, and led the team in rushing. The 78 points scored in one season currently ranks 8th all-time in Bobcat Football. His performance earned Turner the honor of Second-Team All-Lone Star Conference as a running back and All-Texas College Honorable mention honors in 1963.

Turner led the Bobcats in punting during the 1961 and 1962 seasons and also dominated as a kicker for the Bobcats during his career. He is tied for first all-time in Bobcat history in extra point percentage in a season after making a perfect 100 percent (21-21) in 1963. He also ranks 10th all-time in career extra points made with 64. His overall PAT percentage ranks fifth all-time with 97 percent made (64-66) throughout his career. Turner also returned kickoffs for the Bobcats in 1962 and 1963, averaging over 18 yards per return his senior year. During both his junior and senior year he led the Lone Star Conference in scoring.

Turner graduated from Texas State with a bachelor's degree in education in 1964. Upon graduation, he was selected as Gallardian-All College favorite. Turner was signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a punter/ kicker before going on to complete his post-graduate work at Tarleton State University.

After graduation, Turner worked for Fidelity Union Life and Southern Pacific Railroad before beginning an extensive 25 year career as a coach and teacher. Turner began his teaching and coaching career at Killeen ISD in 1965. He coached football at Killeen High School for 16 years, and spent five of those years as the head football coach. After Killeen, Turner moved to Alvin High School where he was also the head football coach and athletic director for five years. Aledo High School was his next stop, where he was an assistant football coach for three seasons. Turner also coached track and field for 13 years during his career.

As a head coach, Turner had a 70 percent winning record. During his career he coached four All-American players, two first round NFL Draft picks, and eight professional football players. Turner also introduced the six-day high school football playoff rule to the UIL, and was a member of the selection committee of the Houston Touchdown club that selected the offensive and defensive player of the year in the Greater Houston area. For the past 15 years, Turner has been the General Manager of the School Services Division of the Faulk Company, and manages 20 school districts and 410 employees.

Turner currently resides in Itasca, Texas and was married to Sherry Ward, who also was a Texas State graduate. They have three children, Tracey, Jeff and Meredith and five grandchildren John Paul, Jenna, Trent, Cade, and Knox.
