Puerto Vallarta, Mexico – Texas State won its first game of the Cure UCD Classic in dominant fashion, 70-52, over Tulane, Friday at the Puerto Vallarta Convention Center. Four Bobcats scored in double figures, led by Wes Davis who had 16.
Davis had his best all-around game of the season, with a season-high four steals to go along with his 16 points. He got the team jump started with a right wing three to put Texas State up 16-9, seven minutes into the game.
Davis' defensive intensity showed in the second half, picking up a steal on consecutive possessions. The first one he took at midcourt and went uncontested to the other end for a layup, giving the Bobcats a 43-36 lead, six minutes into the second half.
Wes had two more steals in the second half, to capitalize the Bobcats' lead. First he took the ball and dished it on a two-on-zero fastbreak to Joel Wright to put the team up 56-42 with 7:36 to go. Davis' final act was a steal which he took end-to-end for his final points of the game, giving Texas State its largest lead of the game at 68-50 with 1:43 to go.
Earlier in the game, Wright had the highlight play of the day. During the first half, Wright was along the left baseline and drove to the rim before throwing a dunk down in the face of a Tulane defender, to draw the foul and go to the line for an and-one opportunity. Wright finished the day with 14 points and five rebounds.
The Bobcats led the game start to finish, after running out to a 7-0 lead to start the game. Perhaps more impressive than the 18-point margin of victory, was holding Tulane to 52 points after the Green Wave came into the game averaging 76.5 points per game.
Texas State will next face Northern Kentucky, Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on www.txstatebobcats.com.
