San Marcos, Texas – Despite gaining some momentum offensively in the second half, it was not enough as the Texas State football team fell 38-7, Saturday night at Bobcat Stadium.
After struggling offensively for much of the first half, Tyler Jones got the Bobcats on the board with 35 seconds before halftime. On 3rd-and-goal from the six-yard line, Jones found Brandon Smith on a slant route for a TD. The play was initially under review due to a Western Kentucky defender knocking the ball out of Smith's hands, but was ruled that Smith had control in the end zone before losing possession.
Texas State continued to drive the ball down the field in its first two possessions of the second half. The Bobcats had the ball on 3rd-and-8 from the WKU 28, when Chris Nutall ran off the right edge for eight yards and a first down from the Hilltopper 20. Unfortunately, the drive stalled and Jason Dann missed a 40-yard field goal, which would have made it a one possession game.
The Bobcats responded on their next drive, getting the ball to midfield, following an 18-yard completion from Jones to Bradley Miller on 3rd-and-10. Two plays later, however, Jones was intercepted stalling the team's momentum. Western Kentucky would take advantage of the Bobcat miscue, going 74 yards in 11 plays, ending with a one-yard touchdown plunge, giving WKU the 24-7 lead.
Texas State was hurt in the first half by four turnovers, with three interceptions and a fumble. Tyler Arndt started on the final home game of his career, but was relieved by Jones following the three interceptions.
WKU running back Antonio Andrews who entered the game among the leaders in the country in rushing, and is the top running back in the Sun Belt, finished the day with 21 carries for 204 yards and three touchdowns. His 47-yard touchdown in the second quarter put the Hilltoppers up 17-0 at the time.
Texas State will end its regular season on a rare Friday game, playing Nov. 29 at Troy. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m., and will be televised on ESPN 3.
