SAN MARCOS, Texas – After a strong sweep of UT Arlington on Wednesday, Texas State fell to Sun Belt Conference leading Western Kentucky, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-19). The loss drops Texas State to 7-6 in conference play and 17-11 overall, but the Bobcats will look to rebound against Georgia State at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
Texas State's offense came from a number of hitters as five players finished with five kills or more. The problem was that no Bobcat had more than six kills.
Shelby Vas Matt and
Molly Ahrens both led the team in kills with six each while
Kelsey Weynand,
Ashlee Hilbun and
Alexandra Simms each tallied five kills.
Caylin Mahoney gave out 24 assists and added six digs with two kills.
Sierra Smith led the team in digs with 12 while Vas Matt added seven. Weynand also had six.
A bright spot for Texas State came at the net where the Bobcats sent 10 blocks back at the Lady Toppers. Texas State outblocked Western Kentucky, 10-5. Ahrens led the team with a solo block and four assists while Hilbun was just behind her with three block assists.
Amari Deardorff and Mahoney finished with two block assists each while
Brooke Smith notched a solo block along with an assist.
The Bobcats started strong in the first set, working up to a 17-13 lead. Western Kentucky used a 5-1 run to tie it at 18-18. Eventually the Lady Toppers overcame Texas State 20-19 and started a back-and-forth battle to the finish. The last lead Texas State would hold in the first set was 21-20, but WKU scored three consecutive, all on kills for a 23-21 lead. From there, Western Kentucky finished it out to gain the early 1-0 lead.
Texas State and Western Kentucky played much the same way in the second set with the Lady Toppers again gaining a slight 25-23 win. In the third set, WKU started too strong for Texas State, obtaining a 15-7 lead. From there the Bobcats started to fight back but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Texas State caps off the weekend with a Senior Day match against Georgia State at 6:30 p.m. Saturday for the team's final home match of the season.
