Postgame Notes

Lafayette, La. – Louisiana displayed why it was chosen the preseason favorite in the Sun Belt Conference, Saturday night, defeating Texas State 48-24 at Cajun Field.

Louisiana struck early through the air, connecting on its first six passes for 182 yards. Included in those six passes were a 53-yard completion and 44-yard completion. The 53-yard connection set up a five-yard touchdown run, while the 44-yard pass went the distance to put UL up 14-0 at the end of the first quarter. Louisiana finished the game with 360 yards through the air.

The Ragin' Cajuns had a bit of luck go their way in the second quarter when Xavier Daniels was in tight man-to-man coverage with Jamal Robinson. Robinson, however, was able to out jump Daniels and fall into the endzone for a 21-0 lead. The home team posted another touchdown just before halftime, Terrence Broadway's third passing TD of the half and went into the intermission with a 28-3 lead.

The second half for Texas State was plagued by two turnovers to begin the half. Louisiana capitalized turning both fumbles into points. Following a Zach Robinson 65-yard punt midway through the third quarter, the Cajuns did it the hard way, driving 99 yards for a score and the 45-3 lead.

Brandon Smith provided the highlights for the Bobcats when he first returned a 92-yard kickoff for a touchdown. Smith went into a pile and was able to come out on the other side without going to the ground.

A few minutes later Smith did it again, returning a 100-yard kick for a touchdown after going through a huge hole on the left side. It was the second-longest kickoff return in school history, with the record being 106 yards.

Duke DeLancelotti led the Bobcats on their first offensive touchdown of the game near the end of the fourth quarter. He drew a roughing the passer penalty before running it in himself for a two-yard touchdown, as the Bobcats ended the night down 48-24.

Texas State will now begin a three-game homestand, starting next Saturday, Oct. 12, at 6:00 p.m., when it takes on Louisiana-Monroe. The game will be broadcasted on the Longhorn Network.
