Bobcats Drop First SBC Match

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – In a Friday night match against tough opponent Western Kentucky, Texas State's Ashlee Hilbun tallied a team high nine kills. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough as Texas State fell, 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-16) to drop to 12-6 on the year and 2-1 in Sun Belt Conference play with the team's first SBC loss.
 
Shelby Vas Matt and Amari Deardorff gave Hilbun support with a combined 15 kills. Vas Matt did so with a .316 hitting percentage, the highest on the team outside of the .429 Caylin Mahoney put up with three kills. Mahoney finished with 20 assists and eight digs while Sierra Smith led the team in digs with 10.
 
In addition to Hilbun's team high nine kills, she also led Texas State in blocks with two solos and two assists. Molly Ahrens added three assists while Mahoney and Deardorff each added two block assists.
 
The Bobcats played their best set in the first one, outhitting Western Kentucky .286 to .242 as both teams finished with 14 kills. Texas State only committed four errors in the set. Deardorff led the team in the opening set with four kills while Hilbun added three. Vas Matt, Mahoney and Alexandra Simms each had two.
 
Texas State and WKU were back and forth for most of the first set, but the Bobcats pulled ahead, 23-20. Western Kentucky used two kills, two aces and a Texas State error to score five consecutive points for the opening set win. From there, it was hard for the Bobcats to bounce back.
 
The Bobcats will look to rebound as they continue their road trip to Atlanta for a Sunday match against Georgia State at 12 p.m.
