Game Notes
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Texas State heads to the road for the team's first Sun Belt Conference matches away from Strahan Coliseum. The first of the weekend's slate pits Texas State against defending Sun Belt Conference Champion Western Kentucky at 6 p.m. Friday followed by a 12 p.m. Sunday match against Georgia State.
Â
Western Kentucky currently sits atop the conference at 3-0 against the SBC, tied with UALR. The only other two undefeated teams in the conference are Texas State and UT Arlington, both at 2-0 in conference play. Georgia State, meanwhile, is second to last with an 0-3 record in the SBC and a 5-12 record on the season.
Â
Outside of UALR, a team that has won nine consecutive matches, the Lady Toppers are the hottest team in the SBC right now with seven wins in a row. In three conference matches against Troy, South Alabama and Georgia State, Western Kentucky has yet to relinquish a single set. In fact, Friday night, the Lady Toppers will be looking for their 30
th consecutive SBC victory and Head Coach Travis Hudson his 202
nd SBC victory.
Â
This will be Texas State's first meeting against Western Kentucky while the Bobcats have faced Georgia State twice, splitting the all-time record, 1-1. The Panthers won the last match, 3-1, on Aug. 31, 2007.
Â
Western Kentucky senior setter Melanie Stutsman is coming off a week in which she was recognized as the Sun Belt's Setter of the Week, her third consecutive award. However, the Lady Toppers and Georgia State will have to defend
Shelby Vas Matt, the conference's back-to-back Freshman of the Week.
Â
In addition to Stutsman, Texas State will have to be poised to defend Paige Wessel and Noelle Langenkamp, who together are averaging 5.64 kills per set. Heather Boyan and Haley Bodway each have contributed 141 kills on the season. Western Kentucky's offense may not be the Lady Toppers' strength though. The team is strong defensively and will likely force long volleys for the Bobcats throughout the match.
Â
Against Georgia State, Dede Bohannon will be the premier threat. She has 176 kills on the year with 2.89 kills per set. She receives plenty of help from Eliza Zachary who has 157 kills, good enough for 2.45 kills per set and at a much more respectable .301 hitting percentage.
