San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State defense dominated ULM Saturday night, allowing just 192 yards, but it was not enough as the Warhawks came away with a 21-14 win at Bobcat Stadium.
Down 14-6, Andy Erickson gave Texas State a huge spark on special teams. He fielded a punt at his own 48 yard line and returned it to the ULM 21. Following a pass interference call in the end zone, the ball was spotted on the ULM 6, and Robert Lowe ran it in to tie the game at 14-14.
Unfortunately the Warhawks were able to come down a few drives later and quarterback Brayle Brown hit the receiver Tavarese Maye across the middle for 20 yards down to the Bobcat 24. A few plays later, ULM punched it in on a 10-yard run to make it 21-14.
Overall, the Bobcat defense held ULM without much success until that final drive, as the Warhawks' only points before that came on two interceptions returned for touchdown by Isaiah Newsome. ULM was only able to manage 80 yards on the ground and 112 yards through the air. On the night, Texas State forced a season-high nine three-and-outs by the Warhawk offense.
One of those star defensive players, David Mayo gave the Bobcats a spark midway through the third quarter, following Will Johnson's punt which backed ULM at its own 1-yard-line. The team put pressure on Warhawk quarterback Brayle Brown who rushed his throw and it floated into the air and into the diving arms of Mayo at the ULM seven-yard line.
Texas State took advantage of the INT, as it resulted in the team's first points of the game, a field goal by Jason Dann, making the score 14-3.
Later in the quarter Robert Lowe led the team on a drive, picking his way through the Warhawk defense, en route to his third 100-yard game of the year. Tyler Arndt then contributed through the air, connecting with Ben Ijah on a catch-and-run for 21 yards down to the ULM 25. The drive stalled there, but Dann again came through, connecting on a career-long 43 yard field goal, as it was 14-6 after the third.
Texas State will now play the second of its three-game home stand, next Saturday at 6:00, against Georgia State. The game will be broadcast on the Sun Belt Network.
