Game Notes

 

San Marcos, Texas –Texas State (13-16, 5-10 SLC) and Sam Houston State (12-18, 6-9 SLC) will battle it out for the last spot in the Southland Conference Tournament on Saturday. The winner of the game will punch their ticket to the tournament that begins next week in Katy.

Series

Texas State leads the all-time series, 92-81. The Bearkats hold a two-game win streak over the Bobcats. Sam Houston escaped with a 71-68 victory over Texas State earlier this season on Jan. 18, 2011.

Scouting Texas State

The Bobcats fell to Lamar, 81-65, on Feb. 29. Matt Staff recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Travis Jones and John Bowman each had 13 points apiece.

Texas State continues to lead the SLC in scoring offense (76.9 ppg), fifth in field goal percentage (.434), and second in three-point percentage (.362).

Texas State sits in fifth place in the SLC West Division with a 13-16 overall record and a 5-10 record in league play.

The Bobcats are led in scoring by junior forward Matt Staff with 13.1 ppg and 7.9 rpg. Brooks Ybarra is second with 12.9 ppg and 3.5 rpg.

Scouting Sam Houston State

Sam Houston State is 12-18, 6-9 in the league. The Bearkats are 4-9 on the road this year. The Bearkats are on a two-game losing streak. The most recent loss for Sam Houston State came at the hands of Stephen F. Austin who defeated the Bearkats 58-47. The Bearkats shot 39.5 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. Demarcus Gatlin led Sam Houston State with 13 points.

Konner Tucker leads the Bearkats in scoring with 11.8 points per game. Steven Werner is second on the team with 10.6 ppg and 6.2 rpg. Sam Houston State ranks 11th in the league in scoring (58.9 ppg), ninth in free throw percentage (.717) and 10th in field goal percentage (.417).

The Southland Conference Tournament will be held March 7-10 in Katy, Texas. The top two teams in each division, plus the next four teams overall will advance to the tournament. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
