Utah State Grabs 81-57 Win Over Texas State

Wesley Davis registered a career-high 22 points, but Utah State (11-1, 2-0 WAC) was able to slip by Texas State (4-10, 0-2 WAC) tonight, 81-57.

Junior guard Deonte' Jones was solid for the Bobcats with 10 points. Junior forward Joel Wright chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds.

Davis was on-point tonight for Texas State, putting on a 10-for-12 performance from the floor en route to his best offensive game in a Bobcat uniform. He scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half to generate the Bobcats' offense. Although the Bobcats seemed to be gaining momentum in the period, they had costly turnovers in the half which led to 14 points for the Aggies.

Utah State sank 11 three-pointers and shot 51.7 percent from the floor, which led to a double digit lead for most of the second half. It was a lead that Texas State just couldn't shake, resulting in its second conference loss of the season.

The Bobcats saw themselves down by nine points with eight minutes to go in the first. One minute later, Jones rattled off eight straight points, capped by a Phil Hawkins free throw to bring Texas State to within two points of the Aggies. Utah State hit back-to-back treys to end the half and take an eight-point lead into the locker room.

Preston Medlin led the Aggies charge with 21 points and six rebounds. Spencer Butterfield chipped in 18 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Jarred Shaw rounded out the top scorers for Utah State with 17 points.

Texas State will hit the road this week. The first stop will be Denver on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 8 p.m. The Bobcats will then face New Mexico State on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 8 p.m.
