Men’s Hoops Drops WAC Opener to San Jose State

– Texas State struggled from the floor today, tying its season-low of 20 made field goals, as it fell to San Jose State, 72-55. Today's game was the first WAC contest for the Cats.

Joel Wright led the Bobcats 'offense with 22 points and six rebounds. Phil Hawkins added 10 points off the bench for Texas State.

Texas State (4-9, 0-1 WAC) had a hard time connecting with the basket in the first half, going 8-for-32 from the floor. The Bobcats stepped it up in the second half, and made four of their first seven shots to get the ball rolling. Texas State started the second period on a 5-0 run with help from Wright and Matt Staff to cut the Spartans lead to eight, but unfortunately that is as close as the Bobcats would get.

The Spartans (6-5, 1-0 WAC) didn't make a single three-pointer in the second half, but they scored 24 of its 40 points in the paint to go up by as many as 22 in the game. The Bobcats never gave up and made some crucial baskets down the stretch, it just came a little too late as Texas State fell in its first-ever WAC game.

Staff snapped his consecutive made free throw streak at 35, after missing the second shot of a pair of free throws in the first half. Entering the contest, Staff was 34-of-34 at the line – top free throw shooter in the nation.  

Louis Garrett led all San Jose State scorers with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting. James Kinney added 12 points and five rebounds, while Chris Cunningham notched a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Texas State will host Utah State on New Year's Eve at 4 p.m.
