Game Notes
San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State men's basketball team will open the season against Fordham University on Friday, Nov. 9 at Strahan Coliseum in the second game of a doubleheader. The women's game will start at 5 p.m., while the men are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
The Bobcats will hit the hardwood with eight returning lettermen and eight newcomers as they play their first season in the Western Athletic Conference. Head coach Doug Davalos enters his seventh season with a program that has ranked in the top 25 in the nation in scoring over the past five years.
Series
Fordham leads the all-time series, 1-0. The two teams last played on Dec. 22, 2011, where the Rams came away with an 81-70 victory on their home court.
Scouting Texas State
Texas State is guided by seniors Matt Staff and Vonn Jones. Both were starters last season, and are joined by junior Reid Koenen; the third returning starter. Staff led Texas State in points (13.3 ppg) and rebounds (7.9 rpg) last season, while Jones dished out a team-high 118 assists and collected 52 steals. Guard Wesley Davis is another rising star for Texas State. The sophomore tied a school single game record of eight steals versus UT Arlington last season.
Scouting Fordham
The Rams return their top four scorers from a year ago. Senior forward Chris Gaston was named First Team Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Conference. Gaston led the Rams last season with 17.1 ppg and 9.9 rpg. He also finished with 46 blocks. Brandon Frazier, the Rams second leading scorer from last year, finished with an average of 11.7 ppg and 118 assists. Bryan Smith (9.6 ppg) and Devon McMillan (7.4 ppg) also return for Fordham.
