Men’s Hoops Falls Short Against Utah, 74-69

– Texas State (3-4) men's basketball dropped a 74-69 decision to Utah (5-2) tonight at Strahan Coliseum. Joel Wright scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as the Bobcats couldn't pull off the victory.

Senior Matt Staff also recorded a double-double. The big man finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Vonn Jones chipped in 16 points.

Tonight's game was a back and forth battle with seven lead changes and 10 ties. The last tie came with eight minutes to go in the game when Corey Stern drained a three-pointer from the top of the arc. Texas State then took a one point lead on a V. Jones free throw. It would be the last lead for the home team however, as the Utes led by as many as 11 points with 22 seconds remaining.

V. Jones and Wesley Davis hit back-to-back threes in the final seconds to pull Texas State to within five points, but the Utes came away with the victory tonight.

After being down by 10 points with a little over five minutes remaining in the half, the Bobcats cut the Utes' lead to three after a trey by Deonte' Jones with 20 seconds on the clock. Staff led the Bobcat charge in the first half with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting.

The Utes were led by Jarred DeBuis who finished with 21 points. Jordan Loveridge added 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Bobcats finished 36.9 percent (24-65) from the floor and 61.1 percent (11-18) from the free throw line. The Utes shot 53.1 percent (26-49) from the floor and 73.9 percent (17-23) from the charity stripe. Utah edged Texas State in the paint, 30-24, but the Bobcats had the advantage in second chance points, 17-9.­­

Texas State continues its three-game home stand on Wednesday, Dec. 5. The Bobcats will host Oral Roberts. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
