San Marcos, Texas – Texas State suffered its first loss at home tonight in over a year, as Stephen F. Austin drained a three-pointer with time winding down to seal the win for the Lumberjacks at Strahan Coliseum tonight. The Lumberjacks fought back to beat the Bobcats, 66-65; snapping the Bobcats 16 home game win streak that was ranked 10th in the nation.
The Bobcats led by as many as 13 points in the second period, but it was the last 38.9 seconds that got the crowd on its feet. SFA's Hal Bateman went to the line and made a pair of free throws to give the Lumberjacks their first lead of the game at 63-62.
Travis Jones took command of the game and drove to the basket for a three-point play that gave the Bobcats a two-point lead with five seconds remaining in the game. When the game appeared to be over, SFA's Bateman shot a desperation three-pointer that shot through the hoop to give the Lumberjacks life.
.5 seconds was put back on the clock after the shot, but it was not long enough for Texas State to get off a shot, as the Bobcats fell to SFA, 66-65, at home.
Texas State led by as many as 14 points in the first half. The Bobcats began the game 4 of 4 from three-point range and finished the period shooting 13-for-25 for 52 percent. Stephen F. Austin was able to catch a rhythm as it entered the locker room down, 34-27.
Senior Brooks Ybarra led all Bobcats with 12 points and four rebounds on 4-for-6 shooting. Sophomore Reid Koenen was clutch with 10 points (4-for-5) and five rebounds. Unfortunately for Texas State, Koenen fouled out with a little over two minutes remaining in the game.
Taylor Smith led SFA with 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Bateman finished with 10 points and six assists.
Texas State shot 52.0 percent from the floor, 47.4 percent from three-point range and 66.7 from the charity stripe. SFA finished 20-for-49 (40.8%) from the floor, 5-12 (41.7%) from three-point range and 21-for-27 (77.8%) from the free throw line.
Texas State will continue conference play with a trip to Natchitoches. La. this weekend to face Northwestern State. Saturday's contest is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Prather Coliseum. The Bobcats return to Strahan Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 14 when it hosts McNeese State at 4 p.m.
