Box Score Laramie, Wyo. – Playing at Wyoming for the first time in school history, the Texas State football team had two costly turnovers in the first quarter to set up a pair of touchdowns as the Cowboys went on to record a 45-10 victory tonight at War Memorial Stadium.
Texas State scored the first points of the game for the second straight week as freshman kicker Will Johnson kicked a 35-yard field goal to give the Bobcats an early 3-0 lead with 9:04 left to play in the opening period.
The Cowboys answered on their next possession when Brandon Miller plowed his way up the middle for a one-yard touchdown run. Daniel Sullivan added the extra point to give the Cowboys a 7-3 lead.
After Shaun Rutherford's pass was hit into the air, Wyoming's Mark Nzeocha came down with the interception to give the Cowboys possession at Texas State's 22-yard line. Two plays later Miller ran up the middle for 14 yards for another touchdown. Sullivan added the extra point to give the Cowboys a 14-3 lead with 5:42 in the opening period.
After the Bobcat defense held the Cowboys on a fourth-and-one at Texas State 21-yard line, the Bobcats drove down the field for their first touchdown and Terrance Franks went around the left tackle for an eight-yard run to cap an 11-play, 85-yard drive with 9:59 remaining in the first half. Johnson added the extra point to pull Texas State to within 14-10.
The Cowboys closed out the scoring in the first half when Sullivan kicked a 20-yard field goal to give Wyoming a 17-10 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Wyoming scored again when Brett Smith ran on a quarterback keeper up the middle for 29 yards to cap a six-play, 62-drive. Sullivan added the extra point to give the Cowboys a 24-10 lead.
On their next possession, Smith ran for another touchdown on a two-yard run after the Bobcats were called for pass interference in the end zone. Sullivan added the extra point to extend the lead to 31-10 after three quarters.
In the final quarter, Wyoming scored a pair of touchdowns on an 18-yard pass from Smith to Chris McNeill over the middle and a 50-yard run by Ghaall Muhammad. Sullivan also kicked the two extra points to make the final score 45-10
With the loss, Texas State drops to 0-2 this season, but return to San Marcos for their first home game of the season against Tarleton State next Saturday, Sept. 17. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium.
