Men’s Basketball: Sam Houston State Preview

– Texas State men's basketball has already clinched a spot in the 2011 State Farm Southland Conference Men's Tournament and will play Sam Houston State on Saturday, March 5 for a chance to earn at least a share of the Southland Conference regular season title with a win over the Bearkats. Tip-off in Huntsville is slated for 7 p.m.

 

Texas State is in a tie for first-place overall with McNeese State. If both the Bobcats and the Cowboys win tomorrow, the teams will share the regular season crown. If one team wins and the other loses, that team will claim sole possession of the title. If both teams lose, then it will go through the long tie-breaker sequence to find out the winner and the seeding for the tournament.

2011 State Farm Southland Conference Tournament

The 2011 State Farm Southland Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Tournament will be held March 8-12, at the Leonard E. Merrell Center in Katy, Texas.  The tournament gets underway Tuesday, March 8 with all four women's quarterfinal games followed by the four men's quarterfinal games on Wednesday, March 9. The women's semifinals will be contested the afternoon of Thursday, March 10 and the two men's semifinal games will be that same night. The championship game of the women's tournament will be played Friday, March 11, at 7 p.m., and the men's championship will be held Saturday, March 12, at 3 p.m.

Texas State (15-14, 10-5 SLC) fell 113-102 to Lamar on Wednesday night for its fifth league road loss of the season. Texas State is led by team captains Cameron Johnson (13.2 ppg, 5.5 rpg) and Tony Bishop (12.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg); Texas State's top scorers and rebounders.  Bishop posted a team-leading tenth double-double for his fourth straight. Ryan White is also taking on a leadership role for Texas State as the senior guard is averaging 11.2 ppg and leads the team with 144 assists. The Bobcats are shooting 45 percent from the field and averaging 79.3 points per game. Texas State averages 77.2 points per game on the road.

 

Scouting Sam Houston State

Sam Houston State (16-12, 9-6 SLC) is on a two-game win streak after victories at Lamar and Stephen F. Austin. The Bearkats are 4-3 at home in conference play this season with their last conference home win occurring on Feb. 12 in a 75-67 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The Bearkats are led by Gilberto Clavell who is averaging 19.5 ppg and 7.4 rpg.  Also averaging double digits for Sam Houston State is Josten Crow (13.0 ppg, 5.3 rpg and 3.5 apg). The Bearkats are averaging 71.2 points per game and 37.6 rebounds per game.

January 19, 2011 - San Marcos, Texas – Ryan White netted a career-high 22 points in route to a double-double to lead Texas State to a 95-91 victory over Sam Houston State tonight at Strahan Coliseum. Students filled the coliseum in the first game back from winter break to watch the Bobcats battle the Bearkats and come away with its fourth-consecutive victory at home.

 

White tied a season-high 11 assists to go with his 22 points for his second double-double of the season. J.B. Conley recorded a season-high 19 points, Cameron Johnson had 14 and Uriel Segura had a season-high 12 points. Travis Jones tied a career-high five treys to finish with 15 points.
