San Marcos, Texas- Texas State University athletic director Larry Teis and head football coach Dennis Franchione announced Tuesday that the Bobcats will host the nationally-ranked University of Nevada Wolf Pack at Bobcat Stadium and travel to the University of New Mexico during the 2012 season.
The Bobcats will play host to Nevada on September 29, 2012 and travel to New Mexico on October 6, 2012. The 2012 season will be Texas State's inaugural season in the Western Athletic Conference and the FBS level. In addition, New Mexico has agreed to play at Nevada during the 2011 season as part of this three-team arrangement.
“These are two programs which will present good challenges for us as we move to the FBS level,” said Franchione. “Nevada is certainly an upper tier FBS program that just won a bowl game and captured national attention with its upset over Boise State last year.
“Playing at New Mexico will be near and dear to my heart after coaching there for several years. We have a lot of friends and have a lot of good memories from the time we spent there.”
“We are extremely excited about being able to host Nevada at Bobcat Stadium and play at New Mexico,” added Teis. “This was an agreement that we have been working on for the past several months and is another step in our process towards FBS football. We almost have completed the rest of our 2012 schedule and will have more exciting news to announce shortly. I want to encourage everyone to get their football season tickets for the 2011 season now and have the first opportunity to purchase those seats in our first FBS season.”
Nevada finished the 2010 season ranked 11th in the final Associated Press poll and ranked 15th in the BCS Standings with a 13-1 record after defeating Boston College in the Fight Hunger Bowl on January 9. The Wolf Pack will be playing their first season as a member of the Mountain West Conference in 2012. New Mexico also is a current member of the Mountain West Conference.
