San Marcos, Texas –Texas State head coach Dennis Franchione filled the final position on his coaching staff when he announced Saturday that Jason Washington has returned to Texas State as his new cornerbacks coach.
Washington, who served as an assistant coach at Texas State from 2004-06, returns to his alma mater after serving the last four seasons in the same capacity at Rice University.
“We are fortunate to have such a quality coach, recruiter and person as Jason join our staff,” said Franchione. “The Texas State community is very familiar with him since he is a former player and coach for the Bobcats.”
In his first stint as an assistant coach at Texas State, Washington coached two-time All-Southland Conference cornerback Walter Musgrove, who led the SLC in interceptions with five and was named the SLC Student-Athlete of the Year in 2006. He also helped guide the Bobcats to an 11-3 record, a SLC championship and the semifinals of the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs in 2005.
A native of San Antonio, Washington was named assistant coach after playing football and baseball for four seasons at Texas State. He was a four-year starter at cornerback for the football team and registered a career-best 66 tackles as senior.
Washington also was a starting centerfielder for Texas State's baseball team and earned Southland Conference All-Tournament Team and NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team honors in 1999, when the Bobcats won the SLC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regional Championships at Baylor in 1999.
Washington fills the final spot on Franchione's coach staff, which includes Mike Schultz, Darrell Dickey, Dennis Darnell, Jason Johnson, Craig Naivar, Brad Franchione, Mike Hudson, Reuben Vaughn and Ben Pollard.
Schultz will serve as the assistant head coach, co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, while Dickey will be a co-offensive coordinator and running backs coach. Darnell will coach the offensive line and Johnson will be the wide receivers coach. On defense, Naivar is the defensive coordinator and safeties coach, Brad Franchione is the linebackers coach and special teams' coordinator, Hudson is the defensive line coach and Vaughn is the defensive tackles coach. Pollard serves as the team's strength and conditioning coach.
