San Marcos, Texas – The Texas State women's basketball team suffered its first setback under head coach Zenarae Antoine, falling to Air Force, 77-69, Monday night at Strahan Coliseum. Ashley Ezeh led the Bobcats with 23 points.
Coming down the court with two minutes left in the game, Jasmine Baugus had her layup attempt blocked and Air Force went the other way for a fastbreak layup, pushing the lead to 71-66. After the Bobcats cut it to three, Alicia Leipprandt hit a runner in traffic to push the Falcon lead back to 73-68
The Bobcats used their three-point shooting to grab an early lead. Diamond Ford drove into the lane before kicking it out to the right wing to Demi Clinch for Clinch's first three of the game. Ford then kept the ball herself, breaking the Air Force press, to drive for a layup and give Texas State the 14-11 lead.
Down 21-18 later in the first half, the Bobcats went on a 10-4 run to regain the lead. During the stretch, Kelsey Krupa and Ashley Ezeh combined for all 10 of the team's points.
With two minutes remaining in the first period, Ford drove through the line, to convert on a fastbreak layup, giving the Bobcats their largest lead of the game to that point at 39-33. India Johnson then stole a ball on the ensuing Falcon possession, and Texas State pushed the lead to 42-33 after Jasmine Baugus got an offensive rebound following a Johnson free throw, which allowed the Bobcats to make two more free throws for its halftime lead of nine.
Air Force came out of halftime strong, beginning the period on a 12-4 run to cut the gap to one. Alicia Leipprandt then hit a jumper from just outside the lane to give Air Force a 48-47 lead with 15:00 remaining. Leipprandt finished the game as the Falcons' leading scorer with 30 points.
The two teams traded baskets for the next eight minutes, with neither team able to grab more than a three point lead until Air Force made a free throw with 5:21 to go, making it a two-possession game at 65-61.
The Bobcats will return to action on Friday at 7:00 p.m., against North Texas, as they attempt to start another win streak.
