San Marcos, Texas – Ryan White netted a career-high 22 points in route to a double-double to lead Texas State to a 95-91 victory over Sam Houston State tonight at Strahan Coliseum. Students filled the coliseum in the first game back from winter break to watch the Bobcats battle the Bearkats and come away with its fourth-consecutive victory at home.
White tied a season-high 11 assists to go with his 22 points for his second double-double of the season. J.B. Conley recorded a season-high 19 points, Cameron Johnson had 14 and Uriel Segura had a season-high 12 points. Travis Jones tied a career-high five treys to finish with 15 points.
With the Bobcats trailing 83-82 in the second half, Jones nailed a three-pointer to give Texas State a two-point lead. The Bearkats were able to tie the game with a layup by Antuan Bootle, but it would be the closest Sam Houston State would get to the Bobcats for the rest of the game. Five straight points by the Bobcats extended their lead to 90-85 with 2:19 remaining. Sam Houston State would outscore the Bobcats in the final two minutes 6-5, but clutch free throws by the Bobcats sealed the victory as they escaped with the come from behind win.
Texas State connected on six treys in the first half and shot 92 percent from the free throw line going 11 of 12 in the period. The Bobcats ended the first half with six straight free throws before Sam Houston State's Lance Pevehouse shot a three-pointer as time expired to end the half. The Bearkats took a 49-45 lead into intermission with the help of Gilberto Clavell's 18 points in the period. White and Segura both had nine points apiece for the Bobcats at the half.
Clavell led Sam Houston State with 26 points and eight rebounds. Josten Crow added 23 points and Marcus Williams had 12 points.
Both teams shot 52 percent from the field. The Bobcats went 27 of 37 at the charity stripe to finish with 73 percent for the game. The Bearkats also shot well at the line hitting 75 percent of their free throws (15-20). Tonight marked Texas State's second-straight victory over Sam Houston State.
Texas State travels to San Antonio on Saturday, Jan. 22 to face UTSA. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the UTSA Convocation Center.
