Nacogdoches, Texas - Garret Carruth tossed a pair of perfect innings and shut down Stephen F. Austin's comeback threat Thursday afternoon and picked up his fourth save of the season in Texas State's 4-2 victory over the foe at Jaycees Field.

The Bobcats improve to 8-2 in Southland Conference play with the win and 16-8 overall. The Lumberjacks fall to 6-3 against the league and 18-8 overall.

Texas State rapped off three-straight scoring innings to stake its 3-1 lead over SFA. In the top of the first, Tyler Sibley drew a walk to lead off the game and stole second, before crossing the plate on a base hit from Jason Martinson.

SFA countered with a leadoff double and sac fly for the tie, but Jeff McVaney came right back at the foe with a solo homer to left field for a 2-1 Bobcat advantage.

In the third, Atwood led off with a single through the right side and SFA rightfielder Bo Coffman booted the ball, giving Atwood time to reach third base. Livingstone followed up with an RBI groundout that pushed the go ahead run across.

Carson Smith faced just 10 batters from the third through fifth innings and picked up a pair of strikeouts while shutting down the `Jacks. However, SFA broke through in the sixth with a shot to centerfield and a pair of base hits that followed sent the team's second run across.

SFA threatened again in the seventh with runners in scoring position and again in the eighth with the bases loaded. A base hit followed by an error in left field put the tying run on and Jordan Lewis beat out a bunt hit to Smith to fill the diamond with no outs.

Carruth entered in relief and forced Michael Haynes to hit into a fielder's choice and snagged the runner at home plate. Livingstone hustled into foul territory to catch a pop up for the second out and Carruth retired Tanner Hines on strikes to snuff out the Jacks.

Smith threw a solid seven innings and improved to 3-2 after allowing just two runs off 12 hits with five strikeouts.

Tyler Herriage was handed the loss for SFA and falls to 4-2.

Texas State walked away with eight hits on the day, led by a two-hit outing from both Jeff McVaney and Clint Vest.

The Bobcats and Jacks will continue the series tomorrow afternoon at noon. Game time has been shifted from 2 p.m. due to projected inclement weather in the area.
