A Look At the Teams

Texas State fell to 3-2 last Saturday when the Bobcats opened their Southland Conference schedule with a 49-24 loss at Southeastern Louisiana. The loss came after Texas State won three straight home games with a 31-17 victory over Southern Arkansas on September 11, a 21-12 win over then #17-ranked Cal Poly on September 18 and a 42-28 victory over Southern Utah on September 25.

The Bobcats are ranked 22nd in the FCS Coaches Poll following the loss at Southeastern Louisiana. Texas State dropped seven spots in this week's poll following the loss.

Nicholls enters Saturday night's game with a 1-4 overall record and the Colonels are 0-1 in SLC play after suffering a 26-7 loss against Sam Houston State last Saturday in Thibodaux, La. Nicholls ended its non-conference play with a 44-28 victory over Bacone College on September 25. The Colonels opened the season with three road losses at San Diego State, Western Michigan and South Alabama.

The Battle For The Paddle

There are many rivalries in college athletics today prompted by various events in history. The Texas State/Nicholls State series is one such rivalry and is identified as “The Battle for the Paddle.”
A rowing oar serves as the traveling trophy with the winning school holding possession of the paddle until the next game in the series. The game is played in recognition of the 1998 floods in Central Texas which forced the postponement of the game from October until late November.
The oar is painted maroon and gold on one side with Texas State victories listed. The opposite side is painted red and gray with Nicholls State victories listed. Since 1998, Texas State has a 6-5 record against the Colonels after winning the last two games between the schools.

Series History

This marks the 29th time that Texas State and Nicholls have met on the gridiron. The Bobcats enter this year's game with a 13-15 series record against Colonels in a series that began on October 4, 1980 at Thibodaux.

The Bobcats won the last two meetings between the two schools after posting a 34-28 victory at Thibodaux last season. Texas State also won 34-10 at Bobcat Stadium in 2008 and enters Saturday night's game with an 8-6 record in home games against Nicholls.

Who's Next?

Following the Nicholls game, Texas State plays a Southland Conference game against Northwestern State on October 23 in its annual Homecoming game at Bobcat Stadium.  After the Northwestern State game, the Bobcats end the regular season playing three of their last four games on the road. Texas State travels to Stephen F. Austin on October 30, before playing their final home game against Central Arkansas on November 6. The Bobcats end the regular season with road games at McNeese State on November 13 and at Sam Houston State on November 20.
