After a milestone victory on Friday morning in the CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier, Texas State (1-1, 0-0 SLC) dropped a 30-19, 30-28, 30-17 decision to 19th-ranked California (2-0, 0-0 Pac-10) Friday night in the `Cats second tournament contest.
Texas State fell behind early in game one, as Cal jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and never trailed in the match. Cal moved the lead to 17-6 before a Texas State time out, and took game one 30-19 from the defending tournament champion Bobcats.
Texas State nailed down the first point in game two, but Cal quickly answered and the two traded points before a 6-0 Golden Bear run that made the score 14-8.
Cal held tightly to the lead, but Texas State was able to chip away and eventually take a 25-24 advantage late in the game. Cal finished on a 6-4 clip and won the game 30-28 to take a 2-0 match lead.
In game three, Cal again took a quick lead, moving it to a 15-9 advantage before a Texas State time out midway through the game. Cal again never trailed in the decisive bout, beating Texas State 30-17 to take the match in straight games.
Texas State was paced in the match by Elizabeth Nwoke's nine kills and Jesi Grisham's 15 assists, while Amy Ramirez had 14 digs and Emily Jones had five blocks defensively for the Bobcats.
California had four players with double-digit kills, led by Alicia Powers and Ellen Orchard who each had 13, and Samantha Carter knocked in 46 set assists in the Golden Bear win. Defensively, Jillian Davis had 13 Cal digs, while three different Golden Bears recorded three blocks on the night.
Texas State is back in action Saturday, taking on Albany at 3 p.m. in the `Cats' final match of the 2005 CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier at Strahan Coliseum.
