Chisum Eclipses 600 In Straight-Game Victory Over Morgan State

Texas State head coach Karen Chisum became one of just nine active Division I coaches with 600 career wins Friday morning, as Texas State (1-0, 0-0 SLC) knocked off Morgan State (0-1, 0-0 MEAC), 30-23, 30-19, 30-19, in the opening match of the CenturyTel/Classic Honda Premier.

The Bobcats and their head coach can't, and won't, rest on the coaching milestone.

"We've got a long way to go, but the exciting part is that we're 1-0 and we got that first victory. We tried to get in a rhythm so that we could prepare for Cal," Chisum said. "What you'll see tonight will be totally different, but we're just excited to have that first win under our belt."

When asked about win number 600, Chisum reflected on the fact that her team is 1-0 and off to a good start in 2005, and the 26-year coaching veteran credited her players, staff and the fans at Texas State for making the milestone possible.

"It feels the same. A win's a win, and we're just really excited," Chisum said. "It's a tribute to Texas State and to the people I surround myself with. I've had good players in 26 years here. We have a good staff and great fans, so it feels good."

In game one of the three-game match, Texas State lit the scoreboard first when freshman Stephanie Bruggeman nailed her first point as a Bobcat. Morgan State would score the game's next two points, which prompted a 5-1 Texas State run, and the Bobcats never looked back.

Elizabeth Nwoke had two consecutive kills to make the score 13-8, and Karry Griffin followed a few plays later by slamming the ball into the Morgan State court to put the `Cats up 15-10.

The Bobcats outscored Morgan State 15-13 to close out game one, which ended on Griffin's second kill of the opening game to give the Bobcats a 30-23 win.

Texas State opened game two in the same fashion that it closed game one, jumping out to an early 4-1 lead, only to have it erased by a Morgan State rally and the only Bear lead of the second game (6-5). Texas State outscored the Bears 25-14 to claim a 30-19 win at game two's conclusion.

The Bobcats never trailed in the third and decisive game of the match, allowing Morgan State to tie the game only once at 2-2. Texas State ended game three on a 28-17 clip, giving Chisum her 600th career victory.

Offensively, the `Cats were led in the match by Nwoke's nine kills and Jesi Grisham's 21 assists. Ashley Stark and Lawrencia Brown each added seven kills. Christina Melvin chipped in 16 assists, while Bruggeman and Amy Ramirez led the Bobcats defensively with nine digs a piece.

Texas State will go for its second straight tournament victory Friday night, as the Bobcats take on 19th-ranked California at Strahan Coliseum.
