2006 Texas State Football Signee Capsules

Feb. 1, 2006

SAN MARCOS - Texas State football coach David Bailiff and his staff signed 19 student-athletes to national letters of intent on Wednesday, the first day of the NCAA's national signing period.

"I think this is a very talented bunch," Bailiff said. "I believe we are going to win a lot of football games with them. We're still trying to balance our class numbers and we were able to do that with the high school and junior college signees as well as the transfers which enrolled here this semester."

With the loss of 27 seniors from last year's 11-3 Southland Conference championship team, the Bobcats looked to fill the void with the signing of 14 high school seniors along with five junior college transfers. Additionally, Texas State has seven spring semester additions to the program from Division I schools along with two junior college transfers who have already joined the program.

"We had to have offensive and defensive linemen, and we had to get big defensive backs," Bailiff said. "We were able to fill those needs. But beyond that, you look at all the young men who went to the playoffs and played in the postseason. We signed a lot of young men who know how to win.

"If we retain them and graduate them, a lot of great things are going to happen to this bunch."

The Bobcats junior college signees included a pair of players off a Reedley College team which won a conference title and produced former Texas State defensive backs Derwin Straughter and Melvin Webber. Texas State signed defensive back Jervoress Crenshaw and offensive lineman Crawford May off Reedley's championship team. Texas State's other junior college transfers include Navarro Junior College defensive lineman Darren Edwards, Trinity Valley Community College linebacker Ric Palmer and Cisco Junior College defensive back Morgan Taylor.

Already enrolled at Texas State this spring is former South Florida kicker Kyle Bronson, Texas Tech wide receiver Jake Brown, Arkansas wide receiver Rick Culbert, Baylor kicker Andrew Ireland, Utah State wide receiver Cameron Luke, Purdue quarterback David Ramirez and Arizona State defensive lineman Mark Washington.

The `Cats had two junior college transfers enroll for the current spring semester. Both Blinn Junior College transfer Julian Humble and Reedley College transfer Jamal Williams will take part in spring drills starting later this month at Texas State.
