Sue Serafini enters her fourth season at Texas State as an Associate Head Coach for the women’s basketball program. Her career has spanned 20 years at the collegiate and professional levels.
Serafini comes to San Marcos after serving three years as an Assistant Athletic Director/Assistant SWA at Stony Brook University in New York. Serafini’s responsibilities included direct oversight of four athletic programs, two departments, as well as serving as the Director of Championships. Serafini hosted 10 America East Conference Championships, and was the tournament manager for the 2010 NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Quarterfinals and the tournament director for the 2011 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship.
Prior to her position at Stony Brook, Serafini was the director of the Fit 4 Me program. This was a joint venture of Women 4 Women and the University of Louisville athletic department. The program was supported by Louisville Metro Government Office of Youth Development and was designed as a gender specific, inclusive health and self-efficacy program designed to empower middle school aged girls on fitness, nutrition and how to be more physically active and health aware.
Serafini has also worked as an advance scout for the New York Liberty of the WNBA from 2004 to 2010 and is currently serving in the same position for the Connecticut Sun. Serafini’s spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at Kansas State University. While there, Kansas State became ranked in the USA Today Top 25 National Poll for the first time in 18 years on Nov. 14, 2002. The team climbed as high as No. 2 in the polls and earned its first ever Big 12 regular season championship in school history in 2004. Serafini played an integral part in the development of several Big 12 All conference players, two Big 12 Players of the Year and two Kodak All-Americans.
A native Pennsylvanian, Serafini arrived at Kansas State after working at the University of Scranton (Pa.), a Division III power for six years. As the head coach throughout the 1994-95 season during Mike Strong’s sabbatical, Serafini led Scranton to a 24-0 regular season record, the first undefeated regular season in the history of the Lady Royal program. Serafini was named the Converse Division III Region IV Coach of the Year after leading Scranton to a 24-2 overall record, a Division III NCAA Tournament bid, and the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom League championship.
While on staff at the University of Scranton, the Lady Royals won several conference championships and made yearly trips to the NCAA Tournament. During her time on the sidelines, the program experienced multiple Sweet Sixteen appearances, Elite eight finishes, and advanced to a Final Four in 1993. She developed several all-conference players along with one Kodak All American. In addition, Sue served as head women’s volleyball coach from 1991-94 and received 1994 Middle Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honors. In 1990, she served as the head women’s basketball coach at Hampshire (Mass.) College.
As a player, Serafini enjoyed a four year career at the University of Massachusetts and was the captain of the 1989-90 team. In 1987-88, Serafini finished third in three-point field goal percentage in the Atlantic 10 Conference and currently is in the top 10 all-time three-point field goal percentage at UMass. She had a very successful high school career finishing 11th on the Pennsylvania all-time scoring list with 2,181 points and over 1,000 rebounds. Her jersey is one of only a few retired at Valley View High School. Sue was inducted into the Northeast Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
Serafini earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education at Massachusetts, and a master’s degree in Human Resources-School Counseling from Scranton.
