Nathan Ott

Nathan Ott joins Texas State for his first season in 2014 after spending six seasons as the throws coach at Southern Utah, his alma mater.

Ott replaces former Texas State throws coach Greg Watson whom Ott coached at Southern Utah. In 2008, Watson set the Southern Utah record in the hammer throw with a distance of 216-feet-6-inches and later qualified for NCAA national competition under Ott’s tutelage.

While at Southern Utah, Ott coached athletes to 13 school records and 134 top ten marks in the SUU record books.

During his final season at Southern Utah, Ott coached the women's indoor shot put Big Sky Conference Champion to a new school record and the Top Performance Award at the Big Sky Championships. One of his pupils also set a new women's weight throw school record.

In 2012, he led the throws group to five conference championships and one Outdoor Field MVP performance. Kayla Kovar, who claimed four of those conference championships under Ott’s guidance, also set new school records in the indoor shot put and weight throw, and outdoor shot put and discus. Meanwhile, nine other throwers made their ways into Southern Utah’s top ten lists.

Several more of Southern Utah’s school records fell in 2010 as Ott helped athletes break three event records. Multiple athletes broke the women’s hammer throw record while the entire throws group rewrote the top ten lists with 28 marks now etched in the Thunderbird record books. Five of the ten athletes at the NCAA Regionals in 2010 were coached by Ott with one making it to the NCAA Championships.

In 2010, Southern Utah throwers were able to build off an excellent 2009 season. They broke four school records under Ott’s tutelage. Southern Utah student athletes recorded 25 marks that rank in the top ten in school history in various events. In addition, five student-athletes advanced to the NCAA West Regionals to give Coach Ott representatives in the shot put, discus, hammer and javelin.

During his time at SUU, Ott coached 19 conference champions, 11 NCAA Preliminary qualifiers and one All-American.

As a collegiate athlete at Southern Utah, Ott set the school’s hammer throw record at 201-feet-5-inches, and tallied 11 conference medals. In 2007, he was the Mid-Continent Conference’s hammer throw champion while scoring in four events – hammer throw, shot put, weight throw and discus. He was also a two-time NCAA Regional qualifier while serving as the team’s leading scorer at the 2006 outdoor conference championships.

Ott is a native of Cedar City, Utah and is married to Jessica Ott.
