James Parman

James Parman, a former All American shot put and discus thrower who has coached 13 SLC conference champions, six NCAA All-Americans, three Olympic Trials qualifiers and two World Championship team members, is in his third season at Texas State. Parman looks to add to those numbers in 2011 with the return of senior throwers Dan Schmidt and Jiovanna Martinez.

In his first season, Parman hit the ground running, producing three SLC champions and one All-American (Kemuel Morales) in the shot put. Morales rewrote the Bobcat record books en route to his NCAA All-American performance at NCAA Championships.

He also coached Katy Hanie, the 2009 SLC discus champion, and Jiovanna Martinez, who finished third in the discus that season.

From 1989-91, Parman was an assistant track and field coach with Northeast Louisiana University. After his stint at NLU, Parman went on to become a personal throws coach from 1992-2008. He coached both a male and a female shot putter to the World Championships.

Also, during that time he was a professional Highland Games athlete. In 2004, became the SGA World Highland Games Champion. He also has the rare distinction of competing at the U.S. Olympic Trials for both the Summer (discus) and Winter (bobsled) Olympic Games.

Parman graduated from Northeast Louisiana in 1987, where he was a four-year member of the track and field team and a NCAA All-American in the shot put and discus.

Parman resides in San Marcos with his wife, Rebecca.
