A former Head Coach of Track and Field at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn., Bill Robertson joins the Texas State Track and Field staff as the assistant distance and cross country coach. He also serves as Meet Director for the team's home track meets.
Â
Robertson arrives in San Marcos, after having coached four NAIA national qualifiers, three Southern States All-Conference team members, two Conference Freshmen of the Year, three Freshman All-Conference members, and leading his team to a total of sixteen combined school records in distance events ranging from the 800-meter run to the 10,000 meters.
Â
Without the use of a track facility or cross country course, a creative training plan and the constant ability to keep his athletes dedicated to daily improvement were necessary to compile these results.
Â
Robertson started his coaching career in 2010 for a Bethel cross country team that only had one NAIA national qualifier in its school’s history. In his first year, he helped guide the team to three national qualifiers as well as personal bests for six other athletes on both the men’s and women’s sides. In 2011, those men improved their 8-kilometer bests by nearly 45 seconds each. On the women’s side the top three runners were freshmen, an early imprint of his recruiting.
Â
As a product of Robertson’s guidance, the best result in Bethel’s cross country history came in 2012, when all five point-scorers ran season bests in the championship race, and the Bethel men’s team won its first TranSouth Conference Cross Country Championship. A constant emphasis on team-based racing strategy propelled the team to the championship.
Â
Robertson has recruited and coached athletes from all over the United States and internationally. In 2014, he brought in one of the top Canadian middle distance athletes in Matthew Viveiros (1:50.28 in 800m and 3:51.75 in 1500m). In 2015, Viveiros broke three school records, was named the Southern States Conference Cross Country Freshman of the Year and qualified for the NAIA Cross Country National Championships.
Â
With the tremendous facilities and opportunities Texas State and the city of San Marcos have to offer, as well as working under the direction of Jody Stewart, the Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, Robertson looks to continue his success in recruiting, developing athletes and reaching team goals at the conference, regional and NCAA national levels.
Â
Robertson, who was a two-time NAIA Academic All-American as a member of the Wildcats, graduated from Bethel in 2010 with a Bachelor’s of Science in mathematics. The Portland, Tenn. native earned his master's in business administration in 2012.
