Former University of Texas standout Terrence Rencher joins Texas State for his second stint as an assistant men's basketball coach with the Bobcats.
Rencher spent the 2012-13 season at Sam Houston State. The Bearkats finished 17-17 in the Southland, and advanced to the semifinals of the Southland Conference Tournament where they loss by three points to 2013 NCAA Tournament participant Northwestern State.
Before arriving at Sam Houston State, Rencher spent one season at the University of Tulsa where he helped direct the Golden Hurricane to a 17-14 overall record and a third-place finish in the 2012 Conference USA race. At Tulsa, Rencher coached guards Jordan Clarkson (a first team All-CUSA selection) and Scottie Haralson (who ranked among the top 25 nationally in three-point field goals).
Rencher coached at Texas State from 2009-11. In Rencher’s second year with the program, the Bobcats finished 10-6 in the Southland Conference in route to a share of the SLC Co-West Division crown. The Bobcats compiled 30 overall wins during his two-year stint.
Prior to Texas State, Rencher was a graduate assistant under Rick Majerus at Saint Louis University. During the 2008-09 season, Rencher helped directed the Billikens to an 18-14 record.
He is the all-time leading scorer at the University of Texas, where he scored 2,306 career points. Rencher ranks sixth in career assists for the Longhorns with 440.
A four-year starter at Texas, Rencher led the Horns to three NCAA Tournament appearances, three Southwest Conference championships, one SWC Tournament title and a combined record of 83-44 from 1992-95.
As a freshman, Rencher was named Dick Vitale's National Freshman of the Year and the Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year in 1992. He completed his collegiate career as an all-conference selection as a senior in 1995.
Following his collegiate career, Rencher was the 32nd overall selection in the 1995 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets and played one season in the NBA with Miami and Phoenix.
Rencher also played in the CBA for one year before playing nine years overseas in Israel, Croatia, Italy, Greece and Germany before beginning his coaching career. While playing for Telekom Baskets Bonn in Germany from 2001-03, Rencher averaged 15.0 and 16.1 points in subsequent years.
In 2007-08, Rencher served as head coach and basketball program director for the boys' varsity program at Regents School of Austin, supervising eight teams and 70 players. In addition to his coaching duties, Rencher served as an academic mentor for the University of Texas men's basketball team from 2006-08.
During his professional basketball career, Rencher played point guard for the Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns in 1995-96 and for the Florida Beach Dogs and Grand Rapids Hoops of the Continental Basketball Association in 1996-97. Highlights of his professional career in Europe from 1997 to 2006 included "Most Valuable Player" awards in Italy and Germany and All-Star team selections in Italy, Germany, Croatia and Israel.
A native of The Bronx, New York, Rencher played his prep basketball at St. Raymond High School in New York City. He was named New York's Mr. Basketball as a high school senior in 1991.
Rencher earned his bachelor's degree in Education with an emphasis in Youth and Community Studies from the University of Texas. He and his wife, Faye, have two daughters Siena and Savannah.
