Patrick Doherty

Patrick Doherty is in his fourth season as an offensive analyst at Texas State after serving three seasons as graduate assistant coach at West Virginia. Doherty served as a graduate assistant coach for two seasons, working with quarterbacks in 2018 after working with special teams in 2017. He was an offensive quality control coach in 2016.

He went to West Virginia after he was the running backs coach and video coordinator at Butler for four seasons.  The Bulldogs ranked as one of the Pioneer Football League’s top rushing teams in during three of those seasons when they finished second among league leaders in 2012, third in 2013 and fourth in 2015. Butler won league titles in the first two years.

In 2014, running back Sam Schrader was named a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, presented to the best freshman player in FCS. Doherty also coached Trae Heeter, who led the Pioneer League in rushing during both 2012 and 2013. The Bulldogs also set a Butler single-season record for rushing with 2,742 yards in 2013. In addition, a Butler running back earned the team’s “Unsung Hero Award,” which was given to  the offensive scout team player of the year each season during his tenure.

Doherty went to Butler after he coached for four years at Franklin College. He was a student assistant coach for the Grizzlies in 2008-09 before coaching tight ends in 2010 and running backs in 2011.  During that span, Franklin had a four-year 37-9 record, won three conference championships and made three NCAA Division III playoff appearances.

He earned his bachelor’s degree at Franklin in K-12 physical education and health in 2012.  A Munster, Ind. native, Doherty played quarterback in high school, and his father, John, was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2014 after serving 30 years as a trainer at Munster High School.
