Jason Russell is in his second year as an assistant strength & conditioning coach at Texas State. Russell came to Texas State after serving in a similar capacity at Rice in 2019.

AT RICE AND HOUSTON
A native of Corsicana, Texas, Russell went to Rice after he was the director of basketball sports performance at Houston for three years. He also oversaw training for the men’s and women’s basketball and golf teams.

AT CALIFORNIA
Russell went to Houston after spending 18 months as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at California. While at Berkeley, Russell directed the strength and conditioning program from the women’s gymnastics team and assisted with the football team.

AT LOUISIANA TECH
He joined the staff at Berkeley after serving as a strength and conditioning assistant at Louisiana Tech University from 2011-2013, and worked with the men’s basketball team and assisting with the football program. He also was a volunteer coach and intern at Sam Houston State University in 2010-2011.

AS AN ATHLETE
Russell was a three-year letterman on the Sam Houston State track and field team, competing in the shot put, hammer and weight throw from 2009 to 2011. He was an All-Southland Conference Second-Team performer in the weight throw, served as a team captain, and was a member of the Southland Conference All-Academic Team.

EDUCATION
He earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology at Sam Houston State in 2010, and received his master’s degree in sports performance at Louisiana Tech in 2012.  
Russell is a certified strength and conditioning coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.
