A former player at Texas State, Tomas Luna begins his second season as a graduate assistant coach for the defense in 2016. Luna was a three-year letterman from 2011-14 when the Bobcats transition to the NCAA Division I FBS ranks and became bowl eligible during each of the past two seasons.
 
He began his career as a reserve linebacker and played on special teams when he played in four games and recorded two tackles. After redshirting a year, Luna moved to the secondary as a safety and continued playing on special teams during each of the last two years when the Bobcats became bowl eligible. He also logged a pair of tackles in 2014.
 
Born Sept. 21, 1990, Luna is a native of Houston, and came to Texas State after attending Navarro College and the University of Houston. He earned All-District First Team honors three times and was named to the district’s All-Academic Team at Hightower High School, and helped the Hurricanes reach the state finals with a 13-1 record.
