  • Title
    Offensive Coordinator
2023 Dave Campbell's Texas Football "40 Under 40" List honoree
2023 Broyles Award nominee

One of the top offensive coordinators in the country – and all before the age of 30 – Mack Leftwich joined Texas State in December 2022.

Leftwich, a former quarterback at UTEP, piloted a Texas State offense in his first year with the Bobcats in 2023 to have a top-15 offense and register the nation’s best year-over-year improvement in terms of scoring offense.

The Bobcats averaged 36.7 points per game in 2023 and scored an FBS-program record 477 points, which helped Texas State reach and win its first ever bowl game. Texas State scored 40+ points in six of its 13 games, including 45 in the 24-point victory over Rice in the SERVPRO First Responder Bowl.

The Bobcats, with its modified-spread, high-tempo approach, were well-rounded on the offensive side of the ball under Leftwich as it averaged 457.6 yards. They ranked 26th in the country in rushing offense (186.7 yards/game) and 28th in passing offense (270.9 yards/game). The team was also 11th in the nation in first down offense (312).

The Texas State offensive totals in 2023 were unprecedented in the program’s FBS history. It set FBS program single-season records in 12 different team categories and established a new overall program record for most passing yards in a season.

Leftwich has coached an All-American in five of his first six seasons as a full-time assistant at the collegiate level, including running back and return specialist Ismail Mahdi in 2023. The Bobcat offensive threat led the nation in all-purpose yards and was 13th in the country in rushing yards. He was named a first team All-American by 247Sports/CBS Sports and a second team All-American by four other media outlets.

Including Mahdi, the Texas State offense featured three All-Sun Belt selections in 2023 along with three honorable mentions. Quarterback TJ Finley, who broke the program’s single-season passing record, had all three of his primary receivers – Joey Hobert (second team), Ashtyn Hawkins (honorable mention), and Kole Wilson (honorable mention) – earn a level of all-conference distinction. Offensive lineman Brey Walker was named All-Sun Belt Third Team as well.

In November 2023, Leftwich was named a nominee for the Broyles Award, which is given to the top assistant coach in college football.

Leftwich joined the Bobcats after he and Texas State head coach GJ Kinne helped UIW average 51.5 points in 2022, which led both the FBS and FCS levels. The Cardinals also averaged more than 580 yards of offense and won the Southland Conference championship while also reaching the semifinals of the FCS Playoffs as the nation’s No. 7 seed.

Leftwich helped tutor FCS All-American quarterback and Walter Payton Award winner, Lindsey Scott Jr. He set a record for FCS touchdowns and accumulated more than 5,300 total yards of offense in his first and only year at UIW.

Scott Jr. was also among eight All-Southland performers on the offensive side of the ball under Leftwich.

The record-breaking 2022 season was the fifth season overall for Leftwich at UIW, with the first four being as the quarterbacks coach. He started his career with the Cardinals in 2018 as a graduate assistant. He was a part of the UIW coaching staff for its three Southland Conference titles (2018, 2021, 2022).

Leftwich worked with star quarterbacks Jon Copeland (2018-19), Cameron Ward (2021) and Scott Jr. (2022), each of whom earned All-America status as Cardinals.

Prior to UIW, Leftwich was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Lehman High School (Kyle, TX) in 2017. The youngest coordinator in the state of Texas, he handled all aspects of the offense including game planning, practice planning, scripting, and play calling. The team broke school records for every major offensive category.

Before joining Lehman HS, Leftwich was a student assistant at UTEP in 2016, where he worked directly with the offensive coordinator. He handled all offensive quality control and was the main on-field communicator with the quarterbacks on game day.

Leftwich played quarterback at UTEP from 2013-15. He was selected to the team's leadership council and was a three-time C-USA Academic Honor Roll selection.

Leftwich graduated with a bachelor's of multidisciplinary studies with a focus in mathematics and education from UTEP in 2017.

His dad, Spencer, was a longtime college football coach, including UTEP where Mack played. His brother, Cutter, is the offensive line coach at North Texas.

Leftwich and his wife Courtney have a daughter, Lennie Marie.
