Mayo also was one of five Bobcat defensive players to earn All-Sun Belt Conference honors with David Mims, Craig Mager and Michael Odiari joining him on First-Team. In addition, College Sports Madness named Germod Williams a Third-Team selection.

The Bobcats also ranked second among SBC defenses with 13 interceptions and fourth in sacks. The Bobcats were also among the top six defenses in rushing and scoring defense.

Thompson came to Texas State after serving two seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas State, where his defense ranked second in forced turnovers with 21 after collecting 12 fumbles and 9 interceptions. The Red Wolves also ranked third in scoring and passing defense during 2013. He also coached four All-SBC players, including First-Team selections Ryan Carrethers and Qushaun Lee at defensive end and linebacker, respectively.

Arkansas State shut out two opponents for the first time since 1987 during the 2012 season, and ranked third in the Sun Belt in turnovers gained after picking up 10 fumble recoveries and 13 interceptions.  Arkansas State had eight players post an interception to tie for the 15th nationally.

In addition to coaching the defense, Thompson served as an interim head coach for Arkansas State during two GoDaddy.com Bowl appearances when the Red Wolves won a 17-13 decision over No. 25 Kent State in 2013 and a 23-20 win against Ball State in 2014.
