Antoine Smith is in his second season as the defensive line coach at Texas State after serving the two previous years as the defensive line coach at James Madison, where he produced a trio of All-Colonial Athletic Association defensive linemen.
in 2015, he coached Alex Mosley, who was an All-CAA Second-Team selection and a Second-Team All-State performer after recording 40 tackles, including 19 solo stops, 4.0 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, five quarterback hurries and two pass breakups.
Sage Harold earned All-CAA First-Team honors and Brandon Lee was a Third-Team selection under Smith’s tutelage in 2014.. Harold ranked among the top 10 nationally in three defensive categories when he was fourth with six forced fumbles, seventh with 23.5 tackles for loss and eighth with 13.5 sacks. Lee also recorded 7.0 sacks and forced five fumbles to rank seventh nationally.
Smith’s defensive line accounted for 27.0 of James Madison’s 37 sacks and forced 12 fumbles in 2013.
Smith went to James Madison after serving three seasons as the defensive line coach at Holy Cross, where he produced three All-Patriot League players. He joined the Crusaders after helping lead Miami (Ohio) to the Mid-American Conference championship and a victory in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in 2010. He also coach All-MAC Second-Team defensive tackle Austin Brown in 2010.
During his three seasons at Youngstown State, he helped guide the Penguins to the 2006 Gateway Conference championship and advance to the NCAA Division I FCS semifinals. His defensive lines included six All-Gateway Conference selections and Third Team All-America defensive tackle Mychal Savage.
He also helped Lafayette win a pair of Patriot League co-championships and two berths into the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs in 2004 and 2005. During his final season, he helped direct a defense that ranked ninth in scoring defense, 11th in total defense, 19th in passing defense and 28th in rushing defense after giving up just 17 points, 296.9 total yards, 166.9 yards passing and 130.0 yards rushing per game.
Smith’s entire defensive front unit at Maine earned All-Atlantic 10 honors after helping the Black Bears finish with a 7-5 record in 2003.
He also helped Minot State win a 2002 Dakota Athletic Conference championship with a 9-2 record and earn a NAIA playoff berth, the school’s first since 1994.
Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education and kinesiology at Maine in 2001, where he was a four-year letterman and three-year starter as a defensive tackle. He also received a master’s degree in health and human performance at Minot State in 2004.
