Adrian McDonald

Adrian McDonald is in his third season as a defensive graduate assistant coach at Texas State.

McDonald comes to Texas State after serving as a volunteer coach at Houston and playing nearly two seasons with the San Diego Chargers and Buffalo Bills.

A native of Lawton, Okla., McDonald signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chargers after playing four seasons at the University Houston. There, he was coached by current Texas State defensive coordinator Zac Spavital.

During his four-year career, McDonald accumulated 299 tackles, 17 interceptions and seven fumble recoveries and seven forced fumbles while playing in 49 games and making 42 consecutive starts for the Cougars. He was a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given to the nation’s top defensive back, and a two-time All-American Athletic Conference selection for the Cougars. He was on the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy and Nagurski Trophy as a senior. McDonald was also on the 2012-13 Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

His 17 career interceptions set a school record and he is second on the school’s career chart with 286 interception return yards. He ranks third with seven fumble recoveries and fifth with seven forced fumbles in his career.

He earned a bachelor’s degree at Houston in 2016 and is working on a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies.
