Texas State vs Southern Utah Postgame Quotes
Sept. 25, 2010
Brad Wright - Opening Statement
“It’s a good win. Our guys came out and played hard for all four quarters against a good football team. The best thing about it all is that we’re going into an off week with a win. Without seeing the tape, I feel like we put forth great effort. They’re a good football team; no doubt about it, and I think we proved tonight that we can be a good football team if we put it all together. The bottom line is we still have more work to do to become better, and that’s what this coming week is going to be about.
Why did you go for it on 4th and 3 in the 1st quarter?
“We try to teach our kids to go out and win. I don’t know why some people are conservative and some people aren’t, but like I said we teach our kids to go in and win.”
Do you think this is the first time in 3 years that you didn’t underestimate Southern Utah?
“I don’t think underestimating them was ever the problem. We know that they are a good team and they’ve been good every year. They play a rough schedule. It’s just that we put it all together and prepared for it the same way we did for last week’s game.
How did you take away their underneath passing game?
“We ran our base stuff and tried to mix things up. (Brad) Sorensen was at BYU for a year. He’s the real deal as far as being able to make every throw in the book so you have to cover them all and I think our defense did a good job of that.”
What was the key to your defense tonight?
“ In my opinion, you win games with defense and a running game.”
How did you dominate a top defense?
“I don’t know that we dominated them. I just think our guys played really hard tonight. We wore them down and kept coming at them. Our offensive line did a great job, because without them we wouldn’t have had the amount of yards rushing that we did. You have to control the line of scrimmage.”
Talk about the secondary’s play.
“It was good. It’s always good when you see balls bouncing around and bouncing off of people. It was a lot of fun, and it was the best game they’ve played since I’ve been here in my seven years.”
Without asking the players, what do you think was the main change that triggered them tonight?
“It’s not like we’ve been bad on defense. Our defense has been playing well. I think our defense has gotten better each week, and we’re going to have to get better this week for us to continue on the path that we’re on. I know that it’s good to be 3-1, but the main thing is to become a better football team each week, and that’s the key for us at this point.”
Why did you run the ball more tonight than pass?
“We felt like we could run the ball on them. They did a lot of things blitz-wise, and I think they started getting frustrated. I felt like our offensive line did a good job. It’s a team effort; you can’t just line up and run it every time because I promise they’ll stuff you so you have to be able to throw the ball. They were one of the top ranked defenses in the FCS and they’ve played two FBS schools, so Tyler (Arndt) and the offensive line did a good job.
Darius Bolden:
Can you break down your two big catches of the game?
“Every day in practice we work on the same things and good game planning. The coach upstairs called the right play and you have to make the play. It’s all about game planning. Coach told us before the game that they were going to play a lot of man, so that’s what we practiced all week. When he calls our number we have to be there to make the play.”
Darryl Morris:
How do you feel about your performance against Tysson Poost?
“I feel as a whole defense we played well and not just the secondary. Definitely people will try to give us credit, but it’s the defensive line. Like you see when he scrambles around and it gets hard to cover, the defensive linemen and the linebackers getting in there makes it a lot easier for the defensive secondary.
What were you thinking about on the last play before halftime when the ball was thrown up?
“I knew it was going to go to Poost the whole time, and it was going to be the last pass of the half, and I saw him when he went up so I tried to go up with him and finish strong. I saw him drop the ball so I felt pretty good.”
T.P. Miller:
Talk about where this defense is now compared with the first game.
“We’ve come a long way. We’re playing more as a team. The tackling, defensive line, and everything has gotten a lot better. Like Darryl said, it’s a team thing.”
Karrington Bush:
How important was it for you to make up for those two fumbles you had?
“It’s always bad when you fumble the ball, but I did have to make up for it. The offensive line did a good job opening up holes for me, and I ran through them.
How were you and Dexter Imade able to be so successful against their defense?
“We run the ball a lot, Dex and I. We pretty much have a competition between the two of us and we make it fun. Everything was the same. We ran a lot of zone plays and were patient. We just do our job.”
How do you feel tonight?
“I feel really good about it. Our O-line did one heck of a job tonight. Hats off to them.”
“We’ve been practicing it all week. I knew we were going to run a lot of zone plays so patience is the key to that.”
